Indoor drone shows have officially entered the UK theatre world.

In January, FlightShows completed the first indoor drone light show test on a UK theatre stage, opening up an exciting new creative option for producers, venues, directors, designers and live event teams.

Drone light shows are often associated with huge outdoor skies, festivals, stadiums and large public events. But indoor drone technology offers something very different. It brings the precision, movement and spectacle of drones into controlled performance spaces, where they can become part of the show itself.

On stage, indoor drones can do more than simply impress. They can help tell a story. They can reveal a character, mark a transformation, create atmosphere, support a musical number, launch a product, or add a completely unexpected moment above the audience’s heads.

For theatre, that is the exciting part.

This is not about replacing existing stagecraft. It is about adding another tool to the creative box. Lighting, automation, projection, sound, video and scenic design all work together to create moments of magic. Indoor drones now have the potential to sit alongside them as a new visual language for UK productions.

The successful test took place at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, and we are extremely grateful to the team there for facilitating it and helping make this UK first possible.

Theatre has always been about creating moments audiences remember.

Now, some of those moments can fly.
