There is a point in most weddings when the formal part of the day gives way to the evening celebration. The speeches are finished, the first dance has happened, the bar is busy and everyone has settled into the party.
It is also a brilliant opportunity to do something completely unexpected.
A drone light show works particularly well at a wedding because it creates a genuine shared moment. You bring everyone outside, the music starts, the first lights rise into the night sky and suddenly every guest is looking in the same direction.
For the next few minutes, everyone experiences the same thing together. That is what makes a drone show such a powerful wedding finale.
A Moment Everyone Shares
Every type of wedding entertainment has its place.
A great band fills the dance floor. A magician can work the room. A DJ carries the party late into the night.
A drone show does something different. For around ten minutes, it brings the entire wedding together.
The couple, their families and their friends all step outside and look up as the show unfolds above the venue. You hear the audience react as they recognise a formation, laugh at a playful moment or cheer when the couple’s initials appear in the sky.
It creates one of those rare points in a wedding when everybody is experiencing exactly the same thing at exactly the same time.
We Pioneered Wedding Drone Shows in the UK
FlightShows pioneered dedicated Wedding Drone Show packages in the UK.
When drone light shows first appeared, they were largely the preserve of major public events, global brands and very substantial budgets. We wanted to make them available for weddings too.
So rather than asking every couple to commission an entirely bespoke production, we created complete drone shows designed specifically for weddings.
The animation, soundtrack, lighting and choreography are already built together as a finished performance, allowing us to offer professionally produced Wedding Drone Shows at clear fixed prices, currently starting from £6,500.
They are not generic drone animations repackaged for weddings.
They are Wedding Drone Shows, designed from the beginning to create a brilliant moment on a wedding day.
Our Wedding Drone Shows Are Shows
A wedding drone show obviously gives us plenty of romantic imagery to work with. Hearts, rings, roses, lovebirds, champagne and the word LOVE all make perfect sense in the sky above a wedding.
But the difference between a collection of romantic pictures and an actual show is how those images are used.
Our Wedding Drone Shows are shows.
The soundtrack, animation, lighting and transitions have all been designed together. One scene flows into the next and the whole performance has a beginning, a middle and an end.
You are not watching a succession of wedding-themed shapes.
You are watching a complete performance created specifically for a wedding.
It Creates Some Incredible Wedding Photographs
There are not many pieces of wedding entertainment that can put a giant illuminated heart in the background of a photograph.
A drone show gives your photographer and videographer an opportunity to capture something genuinely unusual: the couple in the foreground with a huge formation hanging in the night sky above the venue.
Initials and dates can create particularly personal images.
Drone formations also remain visible for long enough to give a photographer time to compose the shot rather than trying to capture the perfect fraction of a second.
The photographs are not the reason to book a drone show, but they are a very good bonus.
The Surprise Can Be Half the Fun
A drone show does not necessarily have to be organised by the couple.
Some of our favourite wedding shows have been surprises.
Rob and Jess had no idea what was waiting for them when their wedding guests were brought outside. We have also worked with parents arranging a drone show as a wedding gift and with one half of a couple keeping the performance secret from the other.
It takes some planning behind the scenes. The venue needs to know what is happening, and somebody needs to work with us on timings, access and the practical arrangements.
But the people receiving the surprise do not necessarily need to know.
That moment when they realise the lights appearing in the sky are there for them can be very special.
If you are thinking about arranging one as a gift, you can read more in A Unique Wedding Gift: Drone Shows.
A Different Alternative to Wedding Fireworks
Drone shows and fireworks often occupy the same place in a wedding: the big outdoor evening finale.
But they create very different experiences.
Fireworks fill the sky with colour, noise and energy. Drone shows can create recognisable images, words and animation, with every movement choreographed precisely to music.
They also avoid the explosive bangs, smoke and falling debris associated with traditional fireworks. That can make them particularly useful at country estates, venues with livestock, locations where noise is a concern or during periods of high fire risk.
We have delivered several wedding drone shows after planned fireworks were cancelled at short notice.
Carla and James at Rhinefield House and David and Carolyn at Kingscote Barn both found themselves without the firework finale they had originally planned. In both cases, we were able to replace it with something completely different.
If your own plans have changed unexpectedly, see Wedding Fireworks Cancelled? A Drone Show Could Save Your Finale.
Of course, you do not need cancelled fireworks to have a drone show.
For plenty of couples, the drone show was always the plan.
You Can Watch the Show Before You Book It
This is something we think is particularly important.
You should know what you are buying.
Our Wedding Drone Shows are finished productions, and we publish complete performances so that you can watch them from beginning to end before choosing one.
You can see the actual animation, hear the soundtrack and understand exactly how the different packages compare.
You are not simply choosing a number of drones.
You are choosing a show.
You can watch our current performances and see the latest packages and prices on our Wedding Drone Shows page.
Will a Drone Show Work at Your Wedding Venue?
Our stock Wedding Drone Shows require a suitable outdoor operating area, including a secure space of approximately 130 metres by 150 metres and a 50-metre separation between the audience and the show area.
That sounds substantial when written down, but many country-house hotels, golf venues, estates, barns and rural wedding venues have more suitable space than couples initially realise.
The drones do not necessarily need to launch from the lawn immediately outside the reception.
We regularly work with venues to find a position that works operationally while still giving guests a great view of the show.
The surrounding airspace also has to be suitable, and any necessary aviation permissions or coordination need to be completed before the performance.
You do not need to work any of that out yourself.
Send us the wedding venue and we can assess whether a show is likely to be possible.
What About the British Weather?
Outdoor weddings and British weather have always had a complicated relationship.
Fortunately, our outdoor show aircraft were chosen with exactly that problem in mind.
FlightShows can operate in winds of up to 45 km/h and in light or moderate rain, within the operational limits of the show.
There are obviously conditions in which we will not fly, but a breezy evening or a bit of rain does not automatically mean the wedding drone show is cancelled.
In fact, audience comfort and visibility can become the bigger issue before the aircraft themselves reach their limits.
We explain the subject properly in Drone Shows and Weather: What Happens If It’s Windy, Cloudy or Raining?.
Make the Sky Part of Your Wedding
A wedding drone show is a relatively short part of a very big day.
But for those few minutes, the whole wedding comes together outside.
The music starts. The drones rise. The first picture appears and the audience realises what is happening.
Then hearts, rings, flowers and other animations move through the sky above the venue, building towards the final moments of the show.
It is romantic, spectacular and completely different from most wedding entertainment your guests will have seen before.
If that sounds like the sort of finale you would love at your wedding, explore our Wedding Drone Show packages and watch the complete performances.
Or, if you already have a venue in mind, send us the details and we can check whether a drone show will work there.
